At its special meeting on August 27, 2008,
the Government Affairs Committee recommended that the Chamber
Board adopt the following as the first planks in a comprehensive
Energy Policy Platform:
1)
Because Florida’s economic prosperity is tied to the
availability of reliable and affordable supplies of energy, the
Chamber supports enacting a comprehensive energy policy that
ensures affordable, reliable energy supplies and promotes energy
security, economic security and national security.
2)
The goal of a comprehensive energy policy should be to
increase energy efficiency and conservation; ensure adequate
energy supplies and generation; renew and expand energy
infrastructure and encourage investment in new energy
technologies without compromising environmental safeguards.
3)
The Chamber supports diversification of our energy
sources. Florida
can best achieve economic stability through the utilization of a
wide variety of energy sources, including oil, natural gas,
coal, nuclear, and other alternative energy resources, including
alternative renewable energy resources.
4)
Any offshore drilling in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico
should allow for ongoing military training exercises and ensure
the utmost protection for Florida's natural coastal resources.
5) The Chamber supports
adequate and appropriate controls and permitting to ensure the
safe, environmentally responsible and economically feasible
development of energy resources and facilities.
6) Oil and
natural gas should be dealt with separately in any discussion of
offshore exploration and/or drilling.
